THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF OLDE
NORTHFIELD
IS AN OFFICAL PARTNER OF THE
THE VETERANS HISTORY PROJECT
|
The
playing of Taps has come to signify the passing of a veteran of military
service. It is with a lamentable frequency that TAPS are being heard around the
United States for our veterans of World War II. Those men and women of the
"Greatest Generation, as they have come to be collectively called, are being
lost to us at a rate of about 1,500 every day. Each carries with them wartime
memories. Those stories are each a thread in the fabric of American Folklife
Center.
Sensing the urgency to record and preserve these dwindling
memories, the United States Congress voted unanimously to create the Veteran's
History Project on October 27, 2000. The agency selected to gather and preserve
this legacy of wartime experiences is the American Folklife Center of the
Library of Congress. Support and funding for the effort comes from the U.S.
Congress, the AARP (Founding Corporate Sponsor) and the Disabled American
Veterans' (DAV) Charitable Service Trust.
The contributors will include
not only uniformed veterans of military service but also our Merchant Mariners.
While histories can and will be taken from veterans of all our military
conflicts, the imperative is to capture information from our aging World War 11
and Korean War veterans first. Wars cannot be won alone on the fields of battle.
Many thousands contributed to the war efforts on the home front. Their thoughts
and experiences are necessary to complete the project. It was the intent of the
Congress that these personal histories of Americans be gathered by Americans.
Volunteerism is the key to the success of the Veterans History Project.
Partners to the Library of Congress are needed at the local level to organize
the collection of stories. In our community, that partner is the Historical
Society of Olde Northfield, with the personal sponsorship of Arch Milani,
Society President.
In addition, volunteers are needed to conduct the
personal interviews, prepare transcripts, catalog any donation materials, and
submit the packages to the Library of Congress. Tom Dirmyer, a Macedonia
resident, has stepped forward to begin interviewing local veterans. His Army
service, including a tour in Vietnam, and his avocation as a military historian
allow for the inter- views to be conducted in an atmosphere of sensitivity and
understanding. Interviews are now underway and have been hosted by the
Northfield VFW Post 6768.
Interested parties may contact Arch Milani at
the Historical Society of Olde Northfield at (330) 467-8322 or by email at

==============================================
If
you intend to send your veterans' historical data directly
to the VETERANS
HISTORY PROJECT, please download the appropriate
forms, complete and mail
them to the proper address.
=================================================
A big
advantage to instead sending your data to the Historical Society of Olde
Northfield
is that the information will quickly be placed on our web site in
a few days,
whereas it will probably take a long time for the thousands of
veterans' stories to appear on the
Veterans History Project web site.
We
will process your information, safely store originals at the
Palmer House
Museum, and forward copies to the
Veterans History Project for placement in
their database and on their web site.
If you intend to send your
veterans's historical data
the Historical Society of Olde Northfield, Please
download the
forms, complete and mail them to:
The Historical Society of
Olde Northfield
PO Box 99
Northfield, Ohio 44067
If you
have difficulty downloading the forms, email us and we will get the forms to
you.
We will return all photographs within 2 weeks of reception,
but
we would prefer that you keep your photos, and send us electronic
photos.
It would be appreciated but not necessary to provide us with an
electonic summary of any taped comments by the veteran.
