GILBERT L. BUESCHER

SKV-1/C

World War II

I enlisted in January 1942 and was called to duty in March. After basic training at Great Lakes, Illinois, I was assigned to the naval training station in Toledo, Ohio. Four years later I reported back to Toledo where I received my discharge papers. In the meantime I was stationed in Newport, Rhode Island. My duties included the payroll department where I worked with my staff of civilian help.

My foreign service duty included two years at naval air station in Argentia, Newfoundland. I kept ammunition records and had to process requisitions for the patrol bombers and fighters on the base. During this assignment I was sent to Jacksonville, Florida for six weeks of training to obtain my first class Aviation Storekeeper rating. I returned to Argentia and completed my two-year assignment.

My last assignment was at naval air station Hutchinson, Kansas. This was a training station for pilots and mechanics, etc. I was part of a crew that kept the hangar and warehouse supplied with parts and filled requisitions for mechanics for repairs to the various aircraft.

Although I was in the Navy for four years ironically I was never assigned any sea duty!
